Hypothenar hammer syndrome
The 'hypothenar eminence' refers to the fleshy edge of the palm between the little finger and the wrist. Hypothenar Hammer Syndrome is a thrombosis (clot) in the ulnar artery in the palm of the hand, often caused by repeated pounding of the base of the hand in occupations such as roofing, hence the name 'hammer' syndrome.
Symptoms can include tenderness in the hypothenar region and lack of mobility in the fingers. Treatment options include changing the activities which caused the syndrome, medication to improve circulation and in some cases surgery to remove obstructions in the blood vessels.
